Under the Fig Trees

1h 33m Drama 2023

Debuting in the Directors’ Fortnight section of last year’s Cannes Film Festival, French-Tunisian director Erige Sehiri’s first fiction feature comes on the heels of a body of work in documentary. The skills learned in that format are utilised to fine effect in the beautifully pitched Under the Fig Trees, which follows a group of workers over the course of a day’s labour in a fig orchard. From their collection in the morning by their boss, the hierarchy of the group becomes clear, with the boss favouring the outspoken, rebellious young woman Fidé (Fidé Fdhili) while the older, more experienced women focus on the work at hand. However, as conversations ebb and flow, and different members of the group drift into working together as the day goes on, the complexity of their long-standing relationships and similarity of their experiences are revealed.
